Helsinki (September 10, 2025) -— KSS Verkko Oy, a subsidiary of KSS Energia, is launching a pilot with Finnish energy tech pioneer Synergi Solutions Oy to test remote-controlled demand response in households within the local grid area.
The aim is to develop smart, scalable solutions to meet growing electricity demand and accelerate the use of renewable energy, without compromising everyday comfort.
As society electrifies and renewables become more widespread, electricity grids increasingly rely on flexible consumption from all users.
New technologies, like Synergi’s cloud-based control platform, enable smart demand response directly from households, without the need for manual hardware installations. This opens up entirely new, cost-effective possibilities for grid operators to strengthen local infrastructure.
A continued innovation partnership between KSS Energia and Synergi – Now bringing flexibility to consumers
KSS Energia and Synergi have previously collaborated on smart home solutions. In this new phase, the pilot is led by KSS Verkko, the business unit responsible for grid development.
For the first time in Finland, households in the KSS grid area can join a demand response pilot by connecting remote-controllable devices, such as electric vehicles, solar panels, or heat pumps, to the free Synergi mobile app. In return, participants receive Smart Rewards for enabling flexible electricity usage.
“Our grid area's transmission capacity needs are expected to nearly double by 2033. We need new ways to balance consumption. This pilot allows residents in Kouvola and Iitti to play an active role in developing the energy system—in a way that benefits both households and the wider community,” says Petri Tuomainen, CEO of KSS Verkko.
European households are already benefiting from flexibility programs
The pilot will provide valuable insights into how household-level flexibility can be integrated into grid operations and considered in future grid investment strategies.
The broader goal is to empower consumers to become active players in the energy transition—and benefit from smart, flexible electricity use.
“Across Europe, there are already many consumer programs that reward responsible electricity use, sometimes with tens of euros per month.
