“At one point, I considered getting a charger, but Synergi made that unnecessary. I no longer have to manually adjust charging times or deal with any of the hassle – and that’s absolutely crucial.”
Jouni Riuttanen, who lives in a row house, doesn’t consider himself a spot-price electricity enthusiast, even though he has long used a spot-price contract. His home is heated with district heating, and he estimates that roughly half of his electricity usage goes to charging his electric car, with the other half used for regular home energy use.
So far, the most practical approach for Jouni has been to ensure his car charges during the cheapest spot-price hours.
“A couple of years ago, I got a plug-in hybrid, then another one, and now I drive a fully electric Audi e-tron. I’ve been using Synergi since its launch, back when the app’s interface was very basic. It has improved tremendously since then.”
The most important feature for Jouni has always been the effortless savings achieved through automatic price optimisation. Another key benefit is that he didn’t need to purchase a new charging station, as the Synergi app made that unnecessary.
Feeling that he’s helping manage big price spikes makes the Smart Rewards meaningful
“I see the bigger picture: to increase the share of renewable energy in the system, those who can adjust their usage need to do so. Of course, I can’t make a huge impact with just my EV alone, but it still feels meaningful to be part of keeping spot electricity prices more stable in the future.”
Thanks to the rewards program, Synergi’s thousands of users collectively form a so-called virtual power plant, where the combined flexible capacity is significant for the electricity grid. Synergi receives compensation from energy companies for this service, which it passes back to its users in the form of rewards.
For Jouni, the most important feature of Synergi’s Smart Rewards is that it ensures the app will remain free to use. Of course, the accumulated rewards are a nice bonus as well.
Currently, Jouni plans to wait until he has earned €50 in rewards and then redeem them as a virtual Visa card. With a virtual Visa, you can pay online at stores worldwide or add it to your phone’s digital wallet to make payments in physical stores.
Any initial concerns about supporting the grid or potential interruptions to charging routines disappeared once he started using the feature.
“Thanks to the rewards program, I get spot-price electricity management for free – and on top of that, I earn rewards. It’s a pleasant surprise to see the points accumulate. But the best part is that I can leave my car plugged in and trust that it will charge during the cheapest hours.”
