About KSS Verkko

KSS Verkko is a regional electricity distribution system operator (DSO), serving over 50,000 customers in Kouvola and Iitti. They ensure reliable electricity supply for homes, businesses, and municipalities, and actively maintain and develop the local grid infrastructure. KSS Verkko is part of the KSS Energia Group.

The challenge

The collaboration with KSS Verkko began by supporting their electricity retailer company KSS Energia.

In 2023, when the collaboration began, KSS Energia had already developed its own customer app, Muutakin®, designed to help households reduce energy costs by providing detailed insights into electricity consumption and its impact. To enhance this offering, KSS Energia made its Synergi DER optimization service available to customers directly through the Muutakin® app interface.

To future-proof their local grid operations, KSS Verkko sought easy-to-use and efficient demand response tools that would allow them to test residential energy flexibility within their grid area. This need became the foundation for their collaboration with KSS Energia, leveraging Synergi’s tools to develop and expand a customer base capable of shifting energy consumption to grid-optimal hours and supporting local flexibility.

The Solution

Synergi provided KSS Verkko with the Synergi platform — a virtual power plant that unifies all household energy assets within a single app while managing every aspect of energy optimisation for consumers, including incentives.

As a result, Synergi and KSS Verkko are now pioneering a first-of-its-kind demand response pilot in Finland. Households within the KSS Verkko grid area can connect remote-controllable devices — such as electric vehicles, solar panels, and heat pumps — to the free Synergi mobile app. In return, participants receive rewards for enabling more adaptable and sustainable electricity usage.

The Results

  • DSO flexibility portfolio growth

By initially launching the Synergi app to KSS Energia customers, the collaboration enabled KSS Verkko to expand its local flexibility portfolio by recruiting participants in the Kouvola and Iitti regions. As the pilot progresses, Synergi and KSS Verkko will conduct flexibility tests to determine the most effective ways to support the local grid.

  • Proven end-user adoption strategies

Through the initial rollout and ongoing pilot, KSS Verkko is gaining insights into the strategies that most effectively drive user adoption and maximize participation retention.

Building demand response programs that work

At Synergi, we help utilities transform residential flexibility from a technical concept into a strategic advantage through a compelling user experience.

Our extensive playbook captures insights on the messages, channels, and strategies that drive adoption in demand response programs. Adoption isn’t just an operational detail — it’s the critical foundation for scaling flexibility, unlocking the full potential of connected assets, and building a clean, reliable energy system that benefits everyone.
