At Synergi, we build solutions for households that want to make the most of their smart energy devices. By smart, we mean devices you can control remotely through an app, which also provide data about your energy use.
Smart devices like electric cars or heat pumps operate through cloud services, which allows us to connect to them directly by partnering with providers that communicate with those clouds.
This connection between Synergi app, a connectivity partner, and your device enables constant communication so Synergi can do its job: automatically controlling your devices so your electric car charges during cheaper hours, adjusting heating and cooling according to spot prices, and even sending commands to your solar panels so they can start charging your electric car.
Why are apps like Synergi possible?
90% of Europeans have said that they think they are owners of their own device data. The MyCarMyData campaign led by 11 motorist associations in Europe, including Autoliitto in Finland, launched a campaign some time ago to support drivers’ right to select providers that offer the most added value from the data their share.
Since you’re in control of your data, you get to choose which apps and services can use it to make your connected devices work better. Thanks to the EU’s open data rules, apps like Synergi can help you get the most out of your energy devices.
Starting 12 September 2025, the EU Data Act makes it official: you own all the data from your energy devices. You can share it with the apps that give you the most value—like Synergi—whenever you want.
We also want to be transparent: it’s important to know what data Synergi needs access to so we can provide our services to you.
At the same time, it’s important for you to know what data apps like Synergi need access to, so we can provide our services effectively.
Synergi’s principles for data collection
At Synergi, we only collect data that’s relevant to provide our services. Anything else? Forget it! We have principles we follow to ensure this is done in practice. Below we mention them shortly but feel free to check our privacy policy for more details:
- Anonymity: We collect anonymous data where possible to minimise the amount of stored personal info.
- Data encryption: We encrypt all personal data to keep it secure and inaccessible to anyone else.
- Data storage: All personal data is stored securely with strict access controls, and we never save your device login details.
- Consent: We always ask before collecting personal data and explain what we collect, how we use it, and who we share it with.
- Compliance: We follow all data privacy laws, including GDPR, and align with FIA’s My Car My Data for added credibility.
- Transparency: We clearly explain how customer data is collected, stored, and used in our Privacy Policy.
- Continuous improvement: We regularly review and improve our data privacy policies, procedures, and systems.
Next we will explain in detail what data we collect so that the app is functional. Then we do a bit deeper into the data we need to provide each our smart features. Let’s go!
What general data do we need to provide our services?
In principle, we will always ask information like your device location, electricity provider and electricity contract type. Asking this information from you is important because Synergi’s business model is built on partnerships with electricity suppliers and energy players. This allows us to co-develop new services with them while keeping the app free for users like you!
In the future, it will also help us understand which users, energy players, and regions are contributing to grid balancing — and ensures those contributions are properly recognised and rewarded.
What data do we need to provide smart charging?
For smart charging to work smoothly, we need to connect to the cloud service of your car brand. This means you, as the user, must grant us consent to access it. The data we access mainly includes vehicle data, your vehicle location, and charging controls.
- Car data: This is the data from your EV that Synergi smart charging requires to operate correctly and calculate when charging should start and stop according to your preferred schedule. This does not include any personally identifiable data. The data we can read includes:
- Brand
- Model & Year
- VIN (vehicle identification number)
- Battery capacity
- Battery level
- Estimated range
- Is plugged in?
- Is fully charged?
- Charge limit
- Charging rate
- Odometer
- Vehicle location
- Control vehicle charging
- Read car location: This data allows Synergi to determine whether your car is at a desired location so that savings and other metrics can be accurately calculated. The data we can read includes:
- Charging locations: Determines if your EV is at a desired charging location, e.g., at home.
- Charging costs: Determines the cost of charging based on your location.
- Control car charging: To assist you with charging during cheaper hours, Synergi can control your car’s charging. Actions we can perform include:
- Smart charging: We follow your preferred charging schedule.
- Charging schedules
- Toggle charging
What data do we need to provide smart heating & cooling?
For smart heating and cooling to work effectively, we need to connect to the cloud service of your HVAC brand. This means you, as the user, must grant us consent to access it. Below is an example of the data we need to provide this feature:
- Read heating & cooling unit data: The following is an example of the data Synergi can read from your heating and cooling device after you have given consent:
- Brand
- Model
- Display name
- Group name
- Category
- Consumption rate
- Current temperature
- Is active?
- Mode
- Heat set point
- Control heating & cooling unit mode: To deliver smart heating and cooling according to electricity prices, Synergi can control your device when the feature is enabled. Examples of controls we can enable include:
- Smart heating & cooling: We heat or cool your home based on your desired temperature and local electricity prices.
- Set temperature: Enables you to set a desired temperature in your home.
What data do we need to provide solar charging?
For solar charging to work effectively, we need to connect to the cloud service of your inverter brand. This means you, as the user, must grant us consent to access it. From your inverter, we need to read data and its location:
- Read solar inverter data: This data allows Synergi to determine your current solar production status. The data we can read includes:
- Brand
- Model
- Site name
- Installation date
- Timezone
- Production rate
- Is producing?
- Total lifetime production
- Read solar inverter location: This information helps us provide insights related to your solar charging production. It allows us to determine how much of your total energy use comes from solar and the revenue rate of electricity produced at the inverter location.
We hope this blog has provided a better picture of all the data we access from your devices and why. As always, if you have questions or parts of this blog were unsure, feel free to email us at support@synergi.so
